National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands Americans enjoy. National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, removed trash and invasive plants and planted over 1.6 million trees.

It keeps the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the "tree army" that worked from 1933 to 1942 to preserve and protect America's natural heritage.

This annual event:
  • Educates Americans about critical environmental and natural resources issues and the need for shared stewardship of these irreplaceable lands;
  • Builds partnerships between the public sector and the local community based upon mutual interests in the enhancement and restoration of America's public lands;
  • Improves public lands for outdoor recreation, with volunteers assisting land managers in hands-on work.

During the American Revolution, French soldiers commanded by the French General, the Comte de Rochambeau, fought alongside American soldiers in the battle for freedom from Britain. In August 1781, the French army camped in Millstone during the long march to Yorktown, Virginia. At Yorktown, the joint American and French forces defeated the British army under Lord Cornwallis, effectively winning the American War for Independence. Millstone is proud of its history and the part that New Jersey played in the American Revolution, and on September 26, 2009, the Borough plans to celebrate the courage and dedication of those who fought for our freedom. Millstone invites your participation in a day of family-oriented events highlighting out heritage and honoring an important time in the history of this country.

In a terrible fire that consumed part of the Asch building (now known as the Brown Building of Science at NYU), nearly 150 garment workers, mostly women, either died from the flames or jumped to their deaths. The fire led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, which fought for better and safer working conditions for sweatshop workers in that industry. To this day no one knows for sure whether the fire was accidental or intentional.

This talk is the first of the Meadows Foundation's ever-popular lecture series of "Fireside Chats". Please stay tuned to the RMVE Blog for information about future talks in this series.

A classic vaudeville theater, the Brook was opened in 1927. That was the same year that the first talking picture, The Jazz Singer, starring Al Jolson hit the silver screen, signaling the beginning of the end for vaudeville. Even though it was opened at the tail end of the era, the Brook was home to a wide variety of acts. Headliners like Tony Bennett and Jackie Gleason entertained packed houses in this 850-seat theater.

After years of neglect, the Brook has been acquired by a non-profit organization, The Somerset County Cultural Arts Center, which dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Brook Theatre as an architectural and cultural landmark. In addition, the organization committed to promoting and cultivating the arts in Somerset County, as well as providing educational opportunities in the Arts for all ages and celebrating the diversity of our community through programs that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Somerset County.

**FRANKLIN INN BOOKSTORE CLOSED TO THE PULIC UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE**

Dear Friends & Fans of the Franklin Inn Bookstore-

Franklin Township recently received a grant to perform a Historical Structure Report (HSR) for the Franklin Inn, also know as the Cornelius van Liew Homestead. This report is welcomed as an essential component to the proper and responsible preservation and repair of this important historical structure from 1752.

The structural engineer who performed the inspection and prepared the report, David Hoy of Gilsanz, Murray, Steficek, LLP, found some significant--but fixable--structural problems and recommended that the Inn is temporarily closed to the public until further review determines the extent of the necessary repairs. Based on these recommendations, the Franklin Township Construction Official, Vincent Lupo has ordered the closing of the Franklin Inn until the major structural improvements are completed.

Please be assured that the plan is to make the necessary repairs and to reopen the bookstore as soon as possible, but it is too early to know when that will be.

The RMVE blog will post news and updates of the progress on this project as soon as the information becomes available. To go directly to the updates about the progress on the Franklin Inn, click on the **FRANKLIN INN UPDATES** label to the right of these posts. Along with the updates, we will post any requests for public help or ideas for how you may get involved to help expedite the reopening of the New & Improved Franklin Inn Bookstore!

Click HERE to read the
MyCentralJersey.com article about the Franklin Inn.

Below is a copy of David Hoys' letter to Meredith Bzdak of Farewell Mills Gatsh (FMG) Architects, the firm overseeing the HSR study, which contains more detailed information about his specific findings and recommendations.
