Princeton Battlefield

YOU ARE INVITED: Afternoon Walking Tour of the Princeton Battlefield – Wednesday, December 30, 2015 - 1:30-3:30 PM, Princeton Battlefield State Park, 500 Mercer Street, Princeton, NJ 08540. As a part of Patriots Week, join members of the Princeton Battlefield Society (PBS) in a tour of Princeton Battlefield and the Clarke House. Meet in the Park parking area. Learn about the no-longer extant backroad used by the Continental Army and see a recently discovered road marker. See the Cadwalder Spy map and learn about some of the secrets it may hold. Learn about the progress of the battle through its two main phases and how the Patriots were beaten back in the first phase, only to rally under General Washington to win in the Counterattack. Hear about General Mercer and others who fell during the battle, including Captain William Shippen, the first U.S. Marine ever to die in a landbattle. Tour a new property just added to Princeton Battlefield State Park and learn about a mass grave that is now a focus of a major new study that PBS is undertaking with a Federal grant. Real-time Tour of the Battle of Princeton - Sunday, January 3, 2016, 6:45 AM – 9:30 AM, Princeton Battlefield State Park, 500 Mercer Street, Princeton, NJ 08540. Experience the Battle Princeton in REAL-TIME as it actually happened early in the morning on January 3, 1777. Meet at the Clarke House. There will be a surprise musket demonstration as a part of the tour. This event, which celebrates the 239th Anniversary of the Battle of Princeton, is also a part of Patriots Week and the New Jersey First Day Hikes Program, and kicks off the Princeton Battlefield Society’s 2016 events. British Army Historian William P. Tatum III, a reenactor and a former Society Trustee, will trace the steps of American and British units at the same time of day as the original battle. The Battle of Princeton was the first battle won against the professional British Army and a crucial turning point in the American Revolution. Free-will donation to the Princeton Battlefield Society for the renovation of the Thomas Clarke House where General Mercer died.
