http://www.nj.com/messenger-gazette/index.ssf/2012/07/crews_breach_the_robert_street_dam_across_the_raritan_river.html
The Calco dam has already been removed. Now the Robert Street dam is gone. With the Nevious dam removal been scheduled next the shad migration can resume ! Hopefully the fish ladders at the weir won't be a severe impediment to fish migration.

NATURE WALK -- SUNDAY, JULY 29, 10am
Kingston Greenways and Friends of Princeton Nursery Lands.
This walk will be led by Steve Hiltner
All are welcome on my annual walk this Sunday along the towpath next to the D&R Canal, starting at Washington Rd and heading towards Harrison St., where a loop trail winds through a savanna landscape of mature oaks and rich understory. Annual spring mowing by D&R Canal State Park crews sustains this habitat. There's a parking lot off Washington Rd. near the canal, across Lake Carnegie from the University's boat house. If time permits afterward, we'll make a brief stop at the university's stream restoration nearby. Flowers in bloom: Hibiscus, ironweed, Joe Pye Weed, cutleaf coneflower...

At the van Vechten House
New Jersey's Historic Lighthouses Bob Gleason Saturday, July 14th at 2 pmVan Veghten House9 Van Veghten Drive Bridgewater, NJ 08807 |
New Jersey has some two-dozen lighthouses along its Atlantic coast and inland waterways, eleven of which are still operational. Nearly all the onshore lighthouses have active support groups working to preserve the structures and make them available to the public. Located in some of the most beautiful areas of the state, a visit to one of these sites makes a perfect weekend outing for the entire family.
Since ancient times, lighthouses have been used as navigational aids to help identify treacherous reefs and safe passages. New Jersey’s first lighthouse was built in 1764 on Sandy Hook at the entrance of New York Harbor. The one-hundred-foot, octagonal structure is the oldest lighthouse in the nation and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. The site is managed by the National Park Service and open to the public.
On Saturday July 14th, Bob Gleason from the New Jersey Lighthouse Society will present an overview of many of these spectacular sites. His arm-chair, slide tour will include technical details and historical information on each of the structures.
Join us at the Van Veghten House to learn about these exciting places that you can visit before the summer ends!
Bob Gleason is a member of the New Jersey Lighthouse Society and is the Chair of Educational Outreach and the Speakers Bureau. He has a B.A. in History and has worked many years with the New Jersey Lighthouse Society giving presentations throughout the region and helping to preserve the lighthouses.
Donation for non-members: $5 (Donations will be given to the New Jersey Lighthouse Society)
