Heritage Trail Bus Tours

"Somerville Through Time" a 'then and now' pictorial history of Somerville, NJ
Sunday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Horne House.
The Heritage Trail Association invites you to visit “Somerville Through Time,” a journey through the county seat using then-and-now photos. Based on the new book, Somerville Through Time, the program will provide a glimpse into the life of the village and its people of a century ago and, through comparison with modern views, show the changes in the borough over time. The borough’s residents include George Washington, who lived in Somerville for six months (December 11, 1778, to June 3, 1779) during the Middlebrook Cantonment of the American Revolution. The historic views will focus mainly on the village in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Somerville grew up around a church, courthouse and a tavern built shortly after the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly after the completion of the railroad in the 1840s. In 1909, Somerville formally separated from Bridgewater Township and became an independent borough. The authors, James L. Sommerville III, Robert Barth, and Linda Barth, will show many of the photos from the book, which will be available for sale at $22. Cash, check, or credit cards are all accepted. So come, sit back, and see Somerville as it was a century ago and as it is today.
