A Lecture by Wade P. Catts
During the winter of 1777 the British 35th Foot was divided in the Raritan River Valley, at both New Brunswick and a short distance upstream at Raritan Landing. Composed of ten companies, the story of the battalion's difficult winter is told in personal letters from one of the company officers to his family in England. Period correspondence from Crown Forces soldiers is remarkably candid regarding foraging, fighting, and the material life of the 35th Foot's winter camp. This lecture is based on new documentary research and archaeological discoveries, which came to light as a result of the Route 18 realignment project.
