Historians Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied's presentation will cover the evolution of burial sites and gravemarkers from the 17th century to the dawn of the 21st century and address topics such as colonial gravestones, stone carvers, Victorian cemeteries, monuments, mausoleums, and ethnic and cultural burial grounds.
The speakers' combined years of research culminated in the wonderful book published by Rutgers University Press, New Jersey Cemeteries and Tombstones: History in the Landscape. Signed copies will be available for purchase!

MEET: The Old Raritan Cemetery
191 South Bridge Street, Somerville
The Old Cemetery was established shortly after the Revolutionary War, and contains many examples of tombstone carvings from the 19th and early 20th centuries! The grounds and stones have been meticulously maintained by the Old Cemetery Association of Somerville.
