2. Hidden Valour: Female Soldiers in the Civil War
Sunday, 10 April, 2011
Starts at 2:00 PM

Civil War Women

April 12 marks the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. Noted history lecturer and Civil War buff Glenn LeBoeuf will be at Farmstead Arts Center on Sunday, April 10 at 2 PM to talk about the Civil War and especially the little known role of women as “undercover” soldiers in the war. The lecture is free, with a donation of $10 requested. Seating is limited to 40 so preregistration is encouraged. Attendees are invited to bring their memorabilia from the Civil War to talk about with Glenn and the other attendees.

Dozens or hundreds of women hid their gender to follow husbands, brothers or just their Nation's flag into the storm of Civil War. Some were discovered relatively quickly, others fought and fell throughout the war. Some were known only after their deaths decades later. Come hear the strange stories of concealment, service in battle and discovery of these patriots without petticoats.

Glenn LeBoeuf, a life-long resident of New Jersey, received his degree in history from Monmouth University in 1976 and taught Social Studies in New Providence, NJ, from 1977-1979. A passionate student of history, Glenn was active in Civil War Reenacting (3nj.org) from 1989-2001 and was one of the Reenactor Coordinators for the largest Civil War reenactment ever held, with over 23,000 reenactors near Gettysburg in 1998. Glenn participated in films such as 'Glory' (1990) and 'Gettysburg' (1993) and is a member of the Abraham Lincoln Association, ide, dealing with historical as well as investment-related topics. For over 25 years, Glenn has given talks for Historical Societies, R.O.T.C. classes, Adult Schools, Colleges, Library Associations and Civic Groups. In June 2007 he spoke at the prestigious Civil War Institute, at Gettysburg College.

KMS Farmstead

The KMS Farmstead consists of an 18th century dwelling, a circa 1800 wagon house, a mid-to late 18th century barn, and a number of 19th century outbuildings. The farmhouse, wagon house, and English barn are significant as early examples of English and modified Dutch framing techniques, as well as for their association with the Reverend Samuel Kennedy, a distinguished local minister and educator; and Colonel Ephraim Martin, a Revolutionary War hero and New Jersey Legislator.

The Farmstead sits along the Passaic River.

Perth Amboy Ferry Slip Museum, Program

British Barracks in New Jersey

The Perth Amboy Ferry Slip Museum (maritime) will be holding another in its monthly Sunday Series of lecture/reception programs.

Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 2 PM at the museum at 300 Front Street, Perth Amboy on beautiful Raritan Bay (foot of Smith Street).

Richard Patterson, distinguished Executive Director of the Old Barracks Museum at Trenton, will be speaking about the importance of the British Barracks in New Jersey and the largest of which was in Perth Amboy.

Patterson will show us rare images of the Perth Amboy Barracks that quartered regiments of the “46th of foot” and the “47th of foot,” the latter leaving to participate in the Battles of Bunker Hill and Saratoga. During the winter of 1776-1777 Perth Amboy was a garrison town filled with Scotch Highlanders, Hessians and British soldiers. Of the five British Barracks built in New Jersey, the one in Perth Amboy was the largest. Completed in 1759, it was the largest building in Perth Amboy and could quarter 300 men.

The Old Barracks at Trenton is the only French and Indian War Barracks still standing in the USA. Nearly 20,000 school children and thousands more people from all over the world visit the Old Barracks every year. It is one of the most visited historic sites in New Jersey. Imagine if Perth Amboy, a Colonial Capital of New Jersey, still had its barracks as a visitor attraction!

But we can still tell of the city’s distinguished historical role in the foundations of our republic and this we will continue to do at our museum!

The requested donation is $5.00 and dessert and coffee will be served.

Please join us for another informative and enjoyable afternoon on Raritan Bay!

In the spring of 1777, following Washington's stunning success at Trenton, the focus of the war shifted to central New Jersey. During the winter months, the British retreated to New Brunswick with a force of 17,000 men. To sustain their garrison, they sent out raiding parties to obtain food and forage from surrounding farms. Frequent skirmishes with local militia and army units proved costly for the British. To retaliate, they decided to mount a major attack.

In the predawn darkness of April 13th, 1777, British General Cornwallis led a four-pronged attack on the American garrison at Bound Brook. Planned by Hessian Captain Johann Ewald, two columns of troops, with cannon, attacked from the southeast, on either side of the Raritan River. A third column, which arrived late, attacked from the east along the Watchung Ridge to cut off any escape to the north. The fourth column attacked from the west, after fording the Millstone and Raritan Rivers to avoid detection by American outposts. General Benjamin Lincoln, whose headquarters was at the Van Horne house, barely escaped capture by fleeing into the hills. After the battle, General Cornwallis was served breakfast at the Van Horne House by Philip Van Horne who was know far and wide as a gracious host.

Start your commemoration of the Battle of Bound Brook at the Van Horne House and join General Cornwallis for breakfast. Philip Van Horne will be on hand to greet you and show you around his house. Copies of Captain Ewald's original map and description of the battle will be available for inspection. General Cornwallis will give a briefing on the state of the war.

Breakfast will be served starting at 8:00 and General Cornwallis's briefing will be at 9:00. Programs and parking instructions will be available for the Battle of Bound Brook reenactment. The opening ceremony will commence at the Old Presbyterian Burying Ground in Bound Brook at 10:30 am.

The Van Horne House is located at 941 East Main Street, Bridgewater across from Patriots Ballpark. Free parking is available behind Target's and at the ballpark.

Abraham Staats House

Abraham Staats House

One of the finest surviving buildings from the 18th century Dutch settlement of the Raritan Valley, this original two-room house was built c. 1740 by the Staats, a Dutch family who inhabited the home for nearly two centuries and expanded the structure several times, including a two-story late-Federal/Greek Revival wing.

Abraham Staats owned the home during the second Middlebrook Encampment (1778-79), when it served as a headquarters for Baron von Steuben, Inspector General under George Washington. During his stay, von Steuben drilled the American soldiers, held a review of select troops in honor of Washington and hosted a reception for sixty top officers and guests in the Staats' orchard.

The Staats' descendants sold the property in 1935, passing to a series of other owners. In 1999, the house was purchased by the Borough of So. Bound Brook, which maintains the property with support from The Friends of Abraham Staats House.

What the D&R Canal State Park Has To Offer
The Delaware and Raritan Canal was built in the 1830s to transport goods to industrial areas. Today it is used as a water supply system and a corridor for people as well as wildlife. As you walk on the towpath you will see 19th century mills and locktender houses, along with hand-built spillways and stone-arched culverts.

The D&R Canal State Park offers a variety of habitats within its 70 mile long corridor. The canal is adjacent to many rivers making it an ideal place to study the diversity and adaptions of organisms found in a freshwater flood plain and riverine habitats. The park also contains areas representing upland forests and fields in varying stages of succession.

No matter what area of the D&R Canal State Park you visit, your students will leave with a better understanding of nature and their place in it.
